When to Cut Hedges, and When to Leave Them Alone
Timing matters more than technique with most garden hedges, and there is a legal side to it as well.

Leave it too long and the moss wins. Do it too often and you wash the sand out of the joints. Here is the middle ground.
For most driveways in Milton Keynes, every eighteen months to two years is about right. A drive that faces north, sits under trees or never gets direct sun will go green faster and is worth doing yearly.
Every clean takes a little of the kiln dried sand out of the joints in block paving. Without that sand the blocks move, the edges spread and weeds get a foothold. That is why we re-sand after every clean, and why washing a drive twice a year does more harm than good.
Green film that is slippery after rain, black spots that do not shift with a brush, weeds coming through the joints, and colour that looks flat compared with the bit under the car. Any two of those and it is time.
A rotary surface cleaner for the main area so there are no stripes, hand lancing around the edges and steps, silt cleared up rather than washed onto the lawn, then fresh sand brushed into the joints once it has dried. That is what our jet washing covers, and if the drive has sunk or spread rather than just gone green, it is a driveway job instead. Sealing afterwards is optional and works best on block paving.
A domestic washer will clean a patio well enough if you have a weekend spare. Watch the pressure on sandstone and decking, keep the lance moving, and buy a bag of kiln dried sand before you start rather than after.
