An Overgrown Garden: Where to Start

An Overgrown Garden: Where to Start

If the garden has got away from you over a wet spring, the order you tackle it in makes the whole job easier.

Cut the height first

Long grass and brambles get strimmed down in stages rather than in one pass. Take the top half off, clear it, then go again lower. It is faster, it is easier on the machine, and you can see what is actually underneath.

Find the edges

Every overgrown garden is smaller than it looks. Once the borders are cut back to their proper line and the lawn edges are redefined, the space usually turns out to be more generous than the owner remembered.

Deal with the waste as you go

Piles of arisings left around the garden get in the way and rot into the lawn. Load as you cut. It feels slower and it is not.

Then decide what it should be

Once it is clear, that is the moment to think about whether it goes back to lawn, or whether artificial grass, a bigger patio or some planted beds would suit how you actually use it.

Keeping on top of it

A cleared garden takes an hour a fortnight to stay clear, or you can put it on a regular round and stop thinking about it. Either way, the hard part is the first visit. That first clearance is exactly what garden maintenance starts with for most of our customers.
